Suffolk County

Timeless English Bitter

ABV 4.0%
Style Smooth and Bitter

The beer that started it all. Our 4.0% Best Bitter is a chestnut-hued tribute to traditional craftsmanship, brewed right here at our Long Melford home. By utilizing the soft, mineral-rich water drawn from our private Stour Valley well, we’ve created a deep, biscuity profile that balances perfectly with the subtle spice of Fuggles and Challenger hops. Reliable, rich, and staying true to our 1986 origins, it remains the definitive taste of a proper, honest Suffolk bitter.

A LEGACY BORN IN 1986

Back in 1986, two friends set out to brew a beer they’d be proud to serve in any Suffolk bar. The result was Suffolk County, the foundation of everything we've built since. Nearly forty years later, we still brew it right here in Long Melford using pure water from our own Stour Valley well. It’s a literal connection to the landscape that birthed us, ensuring every drop carries the "Suffolk soul" that mass-produced bitters simply can't replicate.

THE AUTHENTIC ENGLISH BITTER

We don’t believe in reinventing what is already perfect. This chestnut-coloured bitter strikes the ultimate balance between malt sweetness and moreish bitterness. Layers of caramel, biscuit, and toasted grain meet the subtle spice of classic Challenger and Fuggles hops. It’s a beer that speaks softly but carries nearly four decades of history—a pint that feels both familiar and deeply satisfying, whether enjoyed at home or in your local pub.

Suffolk County Bitter - Fresh

A traditional best bitter praised by customers as "an excellent brew" with "loads of flavour." Shoppers highlight its smooth, well-rounded taste with caramel overtones and a sweet aftertaste. Ideal as a session beer or for warm weather, it's "not too strong" and highly drinkable. Many call it their "new favourite beer" and "one of the best" they've tasted.

Suffolk County reminds me of a traditional old bitter. It has a thirst quenching clean taste. Ideal being served directly from the fridge. An excellent brew.

I've been drinking bitter beer for well over half a century all over the U.K. and can honestly say that this one fully deserves the title 'best bitter'. I wish this website provided a list of outlets!

Great session beer. Not too heavy.

Great for a summers day thirst quencher or for having with food.

Suffolk County is my favourite beer. It captures the character of a good draught beer both in flavour and the lack of "fizz". Delivery is quick and I was kept informed of progress.
