Back in 1986, two friends with a love of proper beer set out to brew something they’d be proud to serve behind any Suffolk bar. The result was Suffolk County — our first-ever ale and the foundation for everything that’s followed. Nearly forty years on, not much has changed, and that’s exactly how we like it.
This chestnut-coloured bitter strikes the perfect balance between malt sweetness and dry, moreish bitterness. Layers of biscuit, caramel and toasted grain meet the subtle fruit and spice of Challenger and Sovereign hops, creating a pint that feels both familiar and deeply satisfying. It’s the kind of beer that speaks softly but carries history — the original taste of Nethergate craftsmanship.
Brewed with water drawn from beneath our Long Melford home, Suffolk County remains a fixture in pubs across the region and a favourite among those who appreciate a proper, honest pint. It’s proof that when you get the balance right the first time, there’s no need to reinvent it. A beer born of Suffolk soil, brewed with Suffolk soul.
