Brewed at the heart of our Long Melford brewery using pure, soft water pulled from the depths of our Stour Valley well, this near-black ale offers a masterclass in complexity. A LEGEND BORN IN 1987

Old Growler began life as a festive one-off called Christmas Cracker, but one taste told us it was no seasonal fling. Named in honor of founder Ian Hornsey's loyal English Bulldog, Growler, this porter has been brewed right here in Suffolk for nearly forty years. Like every drop of Nethergate beer, it starts with pure water from our own Stour Valley well, ensuring a literal connection to the landscape that defined our "grain-to-glass" philosophy long before it was a trend.

THE SUPREME CHAMPION PORTER

Old Growler has picked up silverware from Suffolk to Chicago—twice named CAMRA Winter Champion Beer of Britain and Supreme Champion at the Chicago International Beer Festival. Its secret lies in the balance: a blend of dark malts delivering rich notes of chocolate, treacle, and liquorice, balanced by traditional Fuggles and Challenger hops. It is bold without being brash and smooth without being sweet—a pint that carries the very soul of our brewery.

This traditional porter receives overwhelmingly positive feedback. Customers said it's "dark and chewy, rich and caramelly" with a "spot on" flavor that's highly drinkable. Praised as an all-time favorite, it pairs excellently with food, especially steak and spicy dishes. However, one customer noted it arrived cloudy and didn't clear.

The definitive breakfast , lunch & dinner beer . 3 squares a day in a glass or several . At least that’s my excuse . Why bother with groceries when the brewery is down the road .

Discovered this fantastic ale in Wetherspoons and was very impressed, just my type of ale. Difficult to find a good tasing dark beer and this is perfect. Unfortunately trying to purchase online they do not deliver to the southcoast and is collection only . Thoroughly recommend this beer and hope they put it tins, or whatever it takes to make it sendable through courier.

Old Growler really is my ‘go to’ ale when the summer is over. It’s full bodied, tasty and warming. Just the comfort you need on those dreary, dull, dark and cold evenings. Very more ish too!
