In The Spotlight: The Rising Sun, Bury St Edmunds

Keeping Cask Thriving.

Keeping Community Thriving.

Some pubs feel like old friends — you walk through the door and the welcome hits before the warmth from the fire does.
The Rising Sun is one of those places.

Once a 15th-century coaching inn, this Bury St Edmunds landmark has seen centuries of travellers, townsfolk, and tall tales. Local legend even claims Oliver Cromwell once stayed the night. After a spell away from the limelight, the Sun has risen once more thanks to Burlison Inns, who, with General Manager Lucy at the helm, have lovingly restored it to its rightful place — a proper, family-friendly pub brimming with character, cask, and community.

A Home for Beer Lovers

If you love beer, you’ll love The Rising Sun.
With eight ever-changing cask ales, 15 plus keg and craft taps, and an impressive rotation that celebrates both classic British brewers and modern independents, it’s a true playground for the pint-curious.

We’re proud to have our Suffolk County, Nethergate Craft Lager, and Growling Dog Big Sesh IPA pouring permanently here, alongside a rotating line-up of seasonal specials and a few of our Melford’s Gins and spirits too. Whether you’re a local regular or a curious first-timer, there’s always something new to try — and someone who knows just what to recommend.

A Pub Worth a Look (and Then Another)

Before you’ve even taken a sip, your eyes will be busy.
Every inch of wall space at The Rising Sun is a tribute to Britain’s brewing past — floor-to-ceiling artworks, mirrors, and prints celebrating the best of cask ale from across the UK. It’s a treasure trove of beer history: enamel signs, vintage branding, and brewery memorabilia that turn the pub into a living museum of cask heritage. Honestly, it’s worth the visit for the décor alone — though you’ll probably stay for the pint.

The Sun’s charm runs deeper than what’s in your glass.
The main bar hums with laughter, the conservatory glows, and the spacious function room out back hosts everything from live music, big rugby fixtures, cider festivals to local get-togethers. It’s a place where community spirit flows!

Cheers To Lucy & The Team!

At Nethergate, we’ve always believed cask beer is more than a drink — it’s a living piece of British culture. The Rising Sun proves it. It’s not just a pub; it’s a celebration of craftsmanship, connection, and the joy of a well-poured pint.

So here’s to Lucy and her team at The Rising Sun — for keeping cask alive, craft thriving, and Bury St Edmunds shining bright once again. We're hugely proud to be a stockist in such a wonderful local business.

Next time you’re in town, follow the glow down Risbygate Street. You’ll find good beer, good company, and a proper pub that we're sure you'll enjoy!
