Celebrating 90 Years of Dick Burge!
This week we’re celebrating a milestone for someone who played a hugely important part in our story: Dick Burge, co-founder of Nethergate, who turns 90 today.
Back in 1986, Dick and his friend Ian set up a small brewery in Clare with the aim of brewing proper beer for their local community. Dick took on the commercial side of the partnership, helping turn their homebrewing enthusiasm into a working, growing brewery. Beers such as Suffolk County, Old Growler, Golden Gate, and Augustinian — all still part of our lineup today — came from those early years together .
Dick remained involved over the decades, and in 2014, he stepped back in at a crucial moment to help steady the brewery and guide it into its next chapter. That decision played a significant role in helping us get to where we are today!
To mark his birthday, we’ve brought Dirty Dick back to the taps — a beer first brewed in his honour more than 20 years ago. It’s a simple and fitting way to acknowledge the part he played in shaping who we are.
So here’s to Dick — Happy Birthday to you! Enjoy your special day. Thanks for everything.
